Hamam (Turkish Baths)
Turkish baths are known locally as Hamam. Owing to the emphasis on cleanliness in Turkish society, when the Ottoman Turks conquered Cyprus they built many public baths.
Hamams were found in most major towns on the island.
North Cyprus 's most famous Hamam is the 'Büyük Hamam' or Great Turkish bath in Lefkosa. Built on the ruins of the Lusignan St Georges de poulains church. The baths have changing rooms and both cold and Hot pools, and are still in use today.
Many old baths are very architecturally interesting.
Some of the larger hotels, Club Lapethos and Acapulco for example have their own Turkish Baths.
There are separate baths for men and women or in the case of there only being one bath, different days and times are allocated to men and women.
After entering the 'hamam' clothing is left in the changing rooms. Wrapped in a towel 'peshtemal' one proceeds to the ' göbek tashi ' a large heated stone in the middle. A bath attendant 'tellak' or masseur rubs you down. If the heat in the room becomes too much, one can retire to a cooler room for a while. This method of cleaning is very refreshing.
If while on holiday you decide to take a Turkish bath, it is recommended that you visit the baths at the beginning of your holidays as the bath cleanses you of dead skin, which could also mean your suntan!
