Residence Permit
British nationals wishing to apply for temporary or permanant residency need to apply for a residents permit.
The standard procedure for applying for a permit is as follows:
1. You must make yourself known to your local Immigration Office by taking your passport. Local Immigration Offices are found at the Police station.
2. Permits are issued by the Department of Immigration in Lefkosa, known locally as KKTC Muhacaret Dairesi Müdürlügü. The office can be found in a building at the back of the bus station on the 3rd floor.
3. For a Temporary Permit you will need:
a) A written application with documents showing your identity - photcopies of your passport are acceptable. A letter from your local Muhtar, quoting your passport number. The Koçan (deeds) and number of your residence or equivalent confirming your place of residence. If your deeds have not been issued then a photocopy of your contract will suffice. Proof of sufficient funds to maintain yourselves and any dependants, i.e. photocopies of bank statements , pension slips etc. In addition, six passport size photographs are required.
b) A preliminary investigation by the Immigration Police is requested.
c) If the preliminary investigation report is positive, the immigration section of the local Police Directorate is instructed to accept your application. Documents are then forwarded to the Immigration Directorate of the general directorate of the Police and then onto the Immigration Department.
d) You are then referred to the Dr Burhan Nalbanto g lu state hospital in Lefkosa for a medical report. A blood test and X-Ray are included in these tests. Results usually take about three weeks. The costs of these tests are approximately £ .
e) The applicant may be issued a permit upon applying in person at the Immigration Department if all requirements are met and passport, revenue stamp (approximate value 1YTL) and relevant fee are submitted.
Please note however that these procedures may change from time to time at the relevant department's discretion.
Visitor (temporary) permits are renewed annually.
Permanent Residence Permits
Requirements are as follows:
1. The foreign resident has to obtain and completed a minimum of three consecutive temporary residence permits before submitting an application, which may then take a further two years before being granted.
2. The applicant has to have a place to live. Property ownership is required.
3. The applicant has to have a documented regular income.
4. The applicant has to be retired.
For a Permanent residence permit, you will need:
a) A letter of application together with copies of passport, six passport size photographs, three temporary residence permits, property deeds, income entitlement documents and a record of all entrances and exits to the country (available from the Immigration Police in Lefkosa.)
b) An interview is conducted at the Immigration Department.
c) A police investigation is carried out.
d) If the result of the police investigation is positive then other required investigations are carried out.
e) If the result of all the investigations is positive then the applicant is referred to the Dr Burhan Nalbanto g lu state hospital in Lefkosa for a medical report (as for temporary residency).
f) If all requirements are met and final departmental assessment results in approval then a permanent residence permit may be issued.
g) Passport, revenue stamp (approximate value 1YTL), and relevant fee are then submitted personally to the Immigration Department.
Citizenship
Requirements are as follows:
1. The applicant has to be of full legal age.
2. The applicant should have stayed legally in the TRNC for the past five years consecutively. Absence up to 40 days per year is permissible.
3. The applicant must display determination to settle in the TRNC.
4. The applicant must be of good moral character.
5. The applicant must be free of any health condition dangerous to public health.
6. The applicant must have a job and/or sufficient income to support themselves and dependants if any in the TRNC.
The procedure is as follows:
a) The foreign national wishing to apply for citizenship obtains a document from the general directorate of the police showing their entrances and exits and a document of character and conduct.
b) These documents are submitted to the Immigration Department. The documents are then examined to see whether the individual qualifies to apply. If not the individual is informed accordingly.
c) If duration of legal residence, as well as character and conduct of applicant are within legal requirements, then a specific application form is completed and submitted along with the relevant fee to the Immigration Department.
d) As with temporary and permanent residency permits, necessary police and health investigations are requested by the Immigration Department.
e) If and when all investigations are completed and results are within legal requirements then approval from the Ministry of the Interior is requested.
f) Completion of all the requirements does not necessarily mean that citizenship will be awarded. Final approval rests with the Ministry of the Interior.
