Living in Northern Cyprus !

If sporting activities are not your thing, there are plenty of other ways to entertain oneself whilst in North Cyprus .

North Cyprus is a stunning country and joining an organised mountain walk is an ideal way to appreciate the many variations of flowers found in the mountains of North Cyprus .

Trekking is also an option with hiking tours on the Kyrenia mountain range regularly organised. As well as being good exercise, the walks endeavour to show the walkers some of the historical, interesting and natural sites. During the hot summer months, walks begin at 7.30 am and finish before the sun has reached its full strength.

Yachting and boat tours are another relaxing way to spend time, available throughout the summer trips can be arranged at Kyrenia Harbour . Boats usually sail along the Northern Cyprus coast making stops for swimming; lunch is normally included in the price.

Fishing trips are also available.

Because of the rarity and beauty of Orchids, special walks are organised.

North Cyprus has 32 confirmed varieties of Orchid. Some species are recognisable and some are more exotic.

North Cyprus is a popular destination for Bird watchers, and it is possible to watch over 340 different species of bird in North Cyprus . However, only 46 species are native to Cyprus . Some birds migrate every year to Cyprus , and others use the island as a stop off point before migrating to another country. Cyprus is on a north to south migration route, with March to May being the period of northward migration and southward migration taking place from August to October.

Turtle watching is another extremely popular activity but is only practical during the summer months. North Cyprus is internationally renowned for the Caretta Caretta breed of turtle and since the early 1990's the Marine Turtle Research Group in association with the Society for the Protection of Turtles in North Cyprus and the Department for Environmental Protection have been carrying out annual surveys, recording the turtle's activities during the summer months. Supervised by the team at 'Alagadi' beach, you can witness this unique event. Join the students just before sunset at their base known as 'The Goat Shed'. The best time to watch the Turtles nest is at the end of June and beginning of July. To observe the baby turtles hatching from their eggs visit between the end of August and beginning of September.

Alagadi beach is a 30-minute drive east from Girne.

If you are looking for an evening's entertainment why not visit one of the many casinos in North Cyprus . A night out to the Casino is suitable for those who like the excitement of the gaming tables and for those just wanting to have a little flutter on the slot machines. A trip to the casino is also relatively inexpensive (so long as you do not gamble too much!) A 'bucket' of coins for the slot machines can cost as little as 5YTL (£2.00), once in the Casino drinks and during the week a buffet are available complimentary. In North Cyprus , there are independent casinos such as Tatlises casino and those attached to hotels, The Colony, Jasmine Court , Merit Crystal Cove and the Dome for example.

If it is total relaxation you seek, then North Cyprus has miles of sandy beaches to offer. There are good beaches to be found both East and West of Girne. Some of the most popular beaches include Escape beach in Alsancak like many of the good beaches a small fee is charged, but facilities include, Toilets and Showers, a bar and restaurant serving snacks. Acapulco beach on the east coast is also extremely popular and facilities available consist of an on-duty beach lifeguard, beach volleyball and various water sports including Kayaks, Pedaloes, Wind-Surfing and Scuba-Diving. Visitors to the Karpaz peninsula are able to find unspoilt and deserted beaches and can sometimes spend the day without encountering any one else!

North Cyprus has an abundance of Historical sites to visit. Cyprus over the ages has been the victim of many invasions. Occupiers leaving their own mark on the islands history.

Places to discover include:

The three crusader castles at St Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara.

The castle in Kyrenia that is home to the Ship wreck Museum.

The ancient ruined City of Salamis .

The breathtakingly beautiful Bellapais Abbey.

There are a number of Mosques of both historical and architectural interest.
