Music and Dance in North Cyprus
Turkish Cypriots are very proud of their traditional dancing and children are taught to appreciate music and learn how to dance from a very young age. This love of dancing continues after school years and there are many dance groups over North Cyprus .
There is a dance school in Girne that offers modern dance lessons for the younger generation. A choice of Salsa, Ballroom, and Belly dancing classes are available on a weekly basis.
For those that like to "dance the night away" there are a number of discos providing nightlife. Many discos such as Night Park , Escape, Mare Monte in the Girne area and Lions garden in Famagusta are open-air venues in the summer, opening at 10.30pm , and rarely closing before 5am !
Discos are not to be confused with Nightclubs, as "Nightclubs" in North Cyprus with names like "I like you nightclub" "Playboy" and "Golden Girl" provide an alternative service to a discotheque!
Last year Lefkosa played host to the second annual International folk dance festival. Dance groups from Turkey , Slovakia , Serbia and the TRNC took part and audiences revelled in both the dance routines and the amazing colours of the costumes.
North Cyprus is home to many annual music festivals and last year saw the first "Club music" festival held in Famagusta , with a second already planned for this summer.
Famagusta also holds the International Ma g usa festival; globally recognised jazz, pop and classical music performers give concerts in some of the unique and historical sites in Famagusta .
Other festivals include the Theatre festival aimed at bringing together the arts and the artistes. Selected Turkish plays are performed and local works of arts are displayed. Plays are performed against historical backdrops such as Girne castle, Salamis theatre and Othello castle.
The North Cyprus music festival is held in the impressive Bellapais Abbey, one of the most beautiful and historic sites in North Cyprus . Music is presented by world renowned virtuosos, groups, orchestras and choirs from Turkey, Germany, UK, France, Spain, Argentina, Romania, Russia and of course the TRNC. Bellapais is also the venue for the Bellapais Music festival where classical music is appreciated during a series of open-air concerts.
Live music can be enjoyed at numerous bars and hotels in and around Girne on a regular basis. Jazz is popular as is Latin music and Turkish pop music. Bars such as Roxanne's, Café Harbour and hotels like Jasmine Court , The Colony and the Merit Crystal Cove all have regular live music performances.
During the tourist season many restaurants and hotels organise traditional Cypriot evenings. These evenings feature traditional folk dancing, live music and a performance from a belly dancer, some audience participation may be required! Whilst enjoying the evenings entertainment traditional Cypriot food is served including Meze (mixed starters), and an assortment of freshly Barbequed kebabs. Such evenings are popular among the local population as well as with holidaymakers.
