Medical, Dental and Opticians
The cost of medical treatment in the local hospitals is lower than care in the UK depending on the type of treatment required. There are hospitals in Lefkosa, Girne, Guzelyurt and Gazi magusa which can handle most emergencies.
For minor ailments residents are advised to see a recommended general practitioner, many of whom have had experience in the UK . Doctors charge between £20 - £30 per visit, some also charge for prescriptions.
It is possible to receive treatment in a private clinic and charges for various operations and treatments can be obtained before admission. Payment is usually by cash on completion of treatment. Such clinics are often small and basic.
There are various clinics offering blood tests for a reasonable fee. Specialised tests e.g. scans, mammograms, barium x-rays etc. are available.
If coming to North Cyprus for a short visit, it is worth considering taking out holiday insurance to cover any medical costs incurred.

Points to note when going to a hospital:
When a hospital visit is necessary, it is advisable to maintain contact with friends so that someone knows where you are. If possible go to the hospital with someone.
In the event of a serious illness or accident it is best if two persons accompany the patient. One person should be prepared to stay with the patient in order that information relating to the patients previous medical history can be given when required. If the patient is unconscious or seriously ill the accompanying person should be prepared to ask the following:
A) What is the attending Doctors name?
B) What is the diagnosis?
C) What treatment or surgical procedure will be carried out?
D) What medication is being used?
At most Hospitals and Clinics the doctors speak at least some English.
It is traditional in Cyprus for close relatives or friends to take care of the patients basic needs, such as washing, shaving and feeding. The nursing staff will administer all medical care as instructed by the doctor, including medicines, dressings, drips injections etc.
Personal toiletries are required, also towels, nightdress or pyjamas, wet wipes, tissues, toilet paper and any favourite drink (if allowed).

Proffessional Eye Tests are available in all towns. Spectacles/contact lenses are generally cheaper than in the UK .
The British residents Society organise a Blood Donor day at Girne Hospital every six months (April and October). Blood is collected by the TRNC Blood Bank and personal donor cards are given to donors recording both blood group and units donated.
