Handicrafts
Embroidery and Lace making are old Cypriot traditions going back centuries. Both young and old women skilfully create items such as bedcovers, tablecloths, doilies and headscarves.
Silkworm embroidery is another ancient handicraft that is still practiced today. The silkworm thread is extremely fragile and conditions are very strict. Changes in temperatures perfume and tobacco smoke can affect the worms and even kill them.
Carpet weaving is one more age-old tradition mostly found in the Famagusta area.
'Kilims' are small rugs, generally bold in colour with striking striped designs.
Wicker basket weaving is popular especially the flat baskets known as 'Sele'. These baskets are often used as hanging wall decorations.
Shopping
Shopping in North Cyprus presents many opportunities, there is the chance to purchase hand made items such as small rugs known as 'Kilims', basket ware and embroidered lace tablecloths. Other items available include copper, silver, bronze and onyx goods.
Gold is of a high quality and is priced according to weight.
The traditional Turkish talismans of blue beads or 'nazar boncugu' are very popular souvenirs, these beads ward of the bad spirits of the evil eye. Most Turkish Cypriots have these blue beads in their homes.
'Tavla' boards are also favourites with visitors, Tavla is a traditional game similar to backgammon. It is played daily in the coffee houses and bars of North Cyprus .
Good quality copies of 'designer' label objects are available in certain stores, handbags by 'Louis Vitton', and 'Chanel' are very popular as is clothing adorned by labels such as 'Diesel', 'Burberry', 'Ralph Lauren' and many other favourite designers.
Suitcases are also available very reasonably for those who have purchased too much and need an extra bag to carry it home!
Shops are mostly open between 8am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm , but many remain open into the evening during the summer months.
