Striking from Straw in the House of Commons

British foreign secutary, Jack Straw, said in a speech in the House of Commons about his recent visit to North Cyprus that he thinks the Greek Cypriot administration is seeking to use their EU membership in unacceptable ways to progress United Nations-related-issues.

In his speech he also put it to Greek Cypriot leader Papadopulous that his government is seeking to marginalise the Turkish Cypriot community and is not in any way trying to assist in their economic developement. He stated that the status quo situation is bad for region and for the EU. He also indirectly critiicized the decision that let the South in prior to a settlement. In his striking statement he said "Had EU membership been proposed under the current circumstances, neither any British Government or most European Governments would have touched the idea of allowing a divided Cyprus into the EU." Answering MPs questions durring the weekly Questions Time, Straw also expressed his regret about Cyprus President Tassos Papadopoulos' objection to his meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader at his 'presidential' office, which he described as "entirely counterproductive", noting that his predecessor (Malcolm Rifkind) had done the same thing.

Status quo could be recognised in practice

Straw also said that what he said to the Cypriot officials was that "if they go down that road, they will get exactly what they dont want, because they will make it impossible for Turkey to enter into full negotiations for membership of European Unson and then, over time, there will be a status quo in Cyprus which some countries may start to recognise in practice."

He noted however that "this is not the possition of the UK." Straw also praised the Turkish proposals, declared on 24th Janurary, as a constructive step that deserves to be taken seriously. " I believe, the House too also regarded it a matter of regret that the Administration of President Papadopoulos have sought to distance themselves from the Turkish Cypriot community and to cease to have any contact with it." Straw underlined.
