Still locked over aid issue

The dilema over the two European Union regulations proving a stumbling block to financial aid for North Cyprus looks set to continue after the two sides of the Island remained deadlocked on the issue this week.

The Turkish Cypriot side is insisting on linking the two EU regulations, direct trade and financial aid, but the Greek Cypriot side maintains they should be kept separate.

TRNC Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer said the Turkish Cypriot side's stand on the issue remains unchanged.

The Greek Cypriot side offered to approve the financial aid regulation if the North returned the closed area of Varosha to the South, but Mr Soyer described it as an 'indecent proposal'.

Mr Soyer said the greek Cypriot side was 'strengthening the separatism in the island' by preventing the approval of the financial aid regulation.

US aims to help small businesses in North Cyprus

The Undersecretary of the US State Department responsible for European and Eurasian affairs has said his country is aiming to develop small businesses in North Cyprus. Matthew Bryza said they will provide funds to start the exportation of agricultural products to the US. He said this would be done with direct financial aid- but there were some obstacles caused by laws of the US and important issues concerning the national interests of his country. Stating that great importance would be given to cooperation with Cyprus issues such as the fight against terrorism, human trafficking and money laundering . Mr Bryza indicated the best way to challenge these problems was to work together.

She told how she addressed a conference on Cyprus organised by Tüsiad, the Industralists and Businessmen's Assosiation of Turkey.
