Decision time for the UN
Turkish Prime minister Recep Tayip Erdogan criticized the United Nations security council on Thursday for delaying the process to ease the isolation of Turkish Cypriots after they had supported a UN plan to unify Cyprus.
The Turkish Prime minister was speaking after talks with the UN secretary general Kofi Annan. He commented that the 15 nation council had failed to act on Mr Annans report following last years referendum result. The report recommended the elimination of economic restrictions and barriers on the North.
Mr Erdogan added that a promise had been made to Mr Annan to "always be one step ahead of the Greek Cypriots, and we have fulfilled this promise." "We are deeply distressed thw Security Council has yet to endorse this report....We believe that a decision has to be reached and we are looking for positive results," Mr Erdogan also said "This inability to reach a decision raises question marks about the credibility of the security council. It is finally time for them to make a decision".
US Ambassador "current situation cannot go on forever"
Michael Klosson the United States ambassador to Lefkosa has expressed a belief that a solution can and will be brought to the Cyprus Problem, noting that the current situation on the island could not continue forever.Mr Klosson said that the Greek Cypriot people's rejection of the Annan plan had prevented a settlement on the island. He pointed out that the plan was the result of years of long negotiaitions between the North and South sides of the island. The Ambassador said the two sides shared similar positions on many issues and added that "Confidence" was the key to a solution in Cyprus. In an article published in a Greek Cypriot newspaper Mr Klosson was asked to comment on the amount of construction work taking place in the TRNC, the US Ambassador said that whilst the Greek Cypriots are expressing their concerns on the property issue, the Turkish Cypriots are also voicing their own worries on the property cases being filed against them by Greek Cypriots. He stresses that such problems could only be solved by a solution to the Cyprus problem.
