UK focusing on easing North Cyprus isolation

Following taking over the EU presidency at the beginning of July, Britain has said it will focusing its efforts on seeking approval of the EU's aid and direct trade regulations aimed at easing the Turkish Cypriots isolation.

This was the comment made by the new High Commissioner Peter Millett.

During Luxembourg 's six month, presidency moves on the two regulations were non-conclusive.

Mr Millett told journalists at the High commission in Lefkosa, that British officials were discussing the financial assistance regulation with the European Commission now. He added that this was not a matter to be put aside and progress should be made.

Mr Millett said Britain , as EU president, would not make any proposal or launch any initiative on the Cyprus Problem - the United Nations could only take such a step. However, solution of the Cyprus problem was imperative and the Annan plan should form the basis of potential talks. The High Commissioner also underlined that one of the most important matters Britain would handle during its presidential term was to launch full membership negotiations with Turkey in October.
