TWI Flights Blow
One of the TRNC's three Airlines is stopping flights to and from the UK, just as a leading tour operator announced major plans to expand its promotional and marketing campaign.
Travel World International ( TWI ), flying as Onur Air, will no longer operate in and out of Ercan Airport to London and Manchaester. It leaves Turkish and Cyprus Turkish Airlines as the sole carriers of tourist traffic to and from North Cyprus, seen as vital to the TRNC economy.
Talat calls on UN to get a move on
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat returned from his trip to the United States this week and called on the United Nations to take a more active stance in solving the Cyprus problem. Mr Talat met Un Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York on Monday. He said he had told Mr Annan the Cyprus problem was one which could only be settled within the UN framework, and that the lifting of trade embargos on the TRNC was crucial to start the unification process. In the meeting he said he had conveyed the Turkish Cypriot people's concerns and views, which were slowly but surely being received internationally.
President expects more from UK visit 'soon'
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat has said he is looking forward to meeting British government officials in the UK soon and has talked of the two countries 'special relationship'. Speaking in Istanbul, Mr Talat said the UK was one country which supported the Turkish Cypriot side apart from Turkey, and that expectations from a possible visit to Britain would be much higher than those of last week's trip to the US.
He said 'Britain is a guarantor power and therefore does understand her responsibility. As part of this relationship, our demands from Britain will be much higher than those we sought from the US.
Power cuts over by 2007
Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer said this week power cuts would be a thing of the past by 2007. In an interview with Kibris TV on Monday, he said the bidding process had started for two 30-plus-30 Kilowatt power stations, and the renewal of transmittion lines from Iskele had begun. Mr Soyer said ' we are planning to put an end to electricity problems as of the year 2007 following the completion of bids and the renewal of lines.
Scrap Annan Plan, says Ex-UN Cyprus man
The Annan Plan should be scrapped and a new approach found to bring about a settlement in Cyprus before the Turkish Cypriot community 'withers away', the United Nations' former chief of mission to the island has said.
Gustave Feissel, who was involved with the Cyprus issue from 1984 to 1998, told the South's Sunday Mail newspaper that the Anna Plan had been 'too much, too soon' and that the 'bad taste' it had left in people's mouths meant that trying to 'fix' it would be almost impossible. He cautioned that time is running out for a solution and warned ' There is a danger the Turkish Cypriot community will gradually wither away'.
Mr Feissel called the prospect of recognition for the TRNC a 'non-starter' and urged the Island's two leaderships to stop bickering and vilifying each other and get together.
