US Delegation visit T.R.N.C.
A delegation led by US congressional representative Edward Whitfield, arrived in the TRNC via Ercan airport for a series of talks with government leaders.
US president George Bush who confirmed the right of anyone to fly to TRNC without entering the Island through the South sanctioned the visit. The Delegation first met with the US ambassador to Cyprus Michael Klosson before heading to the presidential palace for a meeting with the TRNC president Mehmet Ali Talat. The delegation that included US congressional representative Edward Whitfield also met with Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and minister for foreign affairs Serdar Denktas. After the meetings ended and the delegation left for more discussions in Ankara , a spokesperson for the US state department commented that "a new political atmosphere" existed now in North Cyprus . The visit was seen as an important step towards the lifting of the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people.
President urges Annan to start fresh talks.
United Nations secretary general Kofi Annan should be encouraged to start a new initiative for Cyprus says TRNC president Mehmet Ali Talat after meetings with Turkeys prime minister.
Mr Talat said we are ready for a new initiative but that does not mean we are ready to give up our rights and determination for a settlement which will be based on the political equality of Turkish Cypriots.
The Turkish premier is due to meet with Kofi Annan and also hold talks with the US president. Mr Talat said that he expected the Turkish Premiers meetings to bring many benefits which he listed as US president Bush increasing his support to the Turkish Cypriots, the start of direct flights and the UN increasing pressure on the Greek Cypriot government.
Dutch MEP says Greek Cypriot leader to blame for solution deadlock.
Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos is to blame for the deadlock in efforts towards a Cyprus solution. The report prepared after a visit to Cyprus last month by European union joint parliamentary committee chairman Joost Lagendijk.
He has called for the removal of international embargoes against the Turkish Cypriots. The report was called historic by Turkish officials "its the first report written by a European parliamentarian blaming the Greek Cypriots". Lagendijk even criticises the EU for giving full membership status to the Greek Cypriots without forst securing a long term solution to the Cyprus problem. The Dutch MEP accuses Papadopoulos of having no interest in resolving the Cyprus problem.
Heavy Rainfall causes problems in Girne.
Last week saw Girne receive torrential rain last week with ten times the average rainfall for the entire month of May falling in just a few hours!
Average rainfall in Girne for May over the past 30 years has been 10mm, but last week saw 157mm fall through the week. The torrential rain bought flooding to many homes and streets and caused traffic chaos.
Blocked drains were thought to be the cause of flooding to several high street shops.
Work begins on new 'green Line' checkpoint.
Construction work has started on the new checkpoint at Bostanc i near Guzelyurt. The news was announced last week after a visit to the area by the Transport and Public works minister Salih Usar, Interior Minister Özkan Murat and speaker of parliament Fatma Ekenoglu .
The work will include a 210 metre long stretch of dual carriageway, truck lanes, parking areas, toilets, customs offices and cabins for border police and customs officials. The work is estimated to cost 700,000 YTL and will take six weeks to complete. Mr Murat remarked that the opening of the new checkpoint would mean fewer traffic jams on the Lefkosa-Guelyurt road in the mornings and the afternoons. He also hoped it would liven up the surrounding area with people crossing from North to South.
