Deputy PM Flies to Brussels
Deputy Prime Minister - Foreign Minister - Serdar Denktash has referred to recent remarks made by the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadapoulos as a new manoeuvre, but, he added that a possible start of dialogue between the two sides can be a significant step forward.
Mr Denktash left for Brussels this morning for contacts with political groupings at the European Parliament.
Speaking on Turkish Radio and Television before his departure, the deputy Prime Minister said that the recent statement made by the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadapoulos that he is ready to discuss humanitarian issues with President Mehmet Ali Talat can be an important step towards the start of a fresh dialogue between the two leaders.
Mr Denktash, however, stressed that a fresh round of negotiations aimed at achieving a comprehensive solution to the Cyprus problem cannot be resumed under the present conditions as the Greek Cypriot leader does not seem to be ready for that.
As for Mr Papadapoulos' request for a meeting to discuss especially the missing persons issue with President Talat, the Foreign Minister said this is purely a political manoeuvre.
He said the Greek Cypriot leader must put forward his concerns first, as regards the Annan plan so that the Turkish Cypriot side can determine its stance.
"But above all, the start of a new process between the two leaders would be a significant step and I think that Mr Talat and Mr Papadapoulos can meet in June after the Greek Cypriot side's general elections" he said.
In Brussels, the Deputy Prime Minister will attend round-table meetings organized by two Brussels-based think-tank institutions.
Mr Denktash is also expected to hold discussions with the European Parliament's High Level Contact Group with North Cyprus, the members of which have recently been on a fact-finding mission to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
