TRNC workers don't want low - wage blue collar jobs
Employers are having problems filling job vacancies with workers from the TRNC who do not want to work in " blue collar " industries. Since the latest clampdown on work permits for foreigners was introduced ln October, the number of jobs remaining unfilled has risen. Ismet Lisaniler has called for the minimum wage to rise, and for more formal training programmes in areas such as construction and tourism to be introduced. Many young people from the TRNC have been university educated therefore expect more than just working for the minimum wage, this means that the huge number of people officially listed as unemployed has not decreased and until training courses are introduced and minimum wages rise there are going to be a huge amount of people left unemployed.
Six packs strip for justice
The levent college in lefkosa was transformed on Tuesday night into a hot bed of machismo and foot balling skill as some of North Cyprus's best football players showed off their best tackles. Players from the TRNC's top team, Çetinkaya, and second decision outfit Küçük kaymaki were auditioning to be on london based pressure group Embargoed!'s new poster. Although Çetinkaya is a top team in Northern cyprus the club is banned from playing in either the Greek Cypriot professional league or European competition. Similarly, the national team is banned by Fifa, world football's governing body, from taking part in international competitions such as the world cup. Footballers are being deprived of their dreams to become international stars simply because of where they come from this campaign will hopefully bring justice for these talented young individuals.
Lockmaci: we're doing our duty
The Turkish Cypriot sideis doing their duty to open the lokmaci barricade, but the Greek Cypriots, preoccupied with approaching elections, are attempting to delay Cyprus's sixth border crossing. Demolition and clearance work began last Thursday on the Turkish side of the barricade, which has divided the Lokmaci/ Arasta area of Lefkosa from the south's Ledra street for more than 40 years. The development came from the agreement last week from the Greek Cypriot authorities that they would follow suit and remove the barriers on their side. But the south later withdrew it's consent, onjecting to a footbridge being erected by the turkish cypriot side to take pedestrians across the " Green line ", and accused the Turkish side of Violating the Buffer zone. The Turkish side are still determined to press on with the footbridge and say it is in no violation and that it is just and excuse from the Greek side to stop the project. The Turkish Cypriots hope to come to an agreement and finish the Footbridge next year allowing each side to celebrate New Year together Within the city walls.
Ancient artefacts unearthed
Ancient artefacts dating back to more than 3,000 years were unearthed by workmen renewing water pipes at Yedidalga. Digging was suspended and antiquities officials stepped in to access the site, which lies within the boundaries of the Soli ruins. The relics that were discovered were from tombs of the Hellenstic - Roman era. A salvation operation will be carried out to save the ancient wares, and then the tombs will be resealed under supervision. The workers were not aware that they were digging within the boundaries of the Soli ruins and were only given permission to do shallow digging not deep. Excavations in the Soli area have not yet been completed. In the area there are Antiquities dating back to 9 historical kingdoms.
Saying it with flowers
Tulips by Turkish cypriot sculptor Bahire Korol were this week placed on the roundabout in front of Pizza Pronto, Mehmet Akif Cadessi, as part of the Turkish Municipality project to bring art onto the city's streets. The red flowers representing the " Medos tulip " , became the third installation to be erected on the key junctions. The Medos tulip is endemic to Cyprus and one of the symbols of the island. Sheaths of glass placed around the tulips are intended to convey the message that the flowers are becoming endangered and are under protection. Mayor Kutlay Erk believes that Ms Koral has improved the appearance of the area and also given the message of the need to protect the Turkish Heritage.
