Greek Cypriot lawyer charged with harassing Karmi Villagers

Constantin Candounas the Greek Cypriot lawyer spearheading the controversial case against Lapta property owner Linda Orams, was arrested and charged last week with harassment and making provocative threats.

Following his arrest on Tuesday 01 st March, Candounas declined to comment on whether or not he intended to appear in a TRNC court after being accused of harassing members of the Karmi Community. Candounas has indicated he will bring more cases against foreign owners of former Greek Cypriot property.

Shelley White chairperson of the newly formed 'Eupro' European Property Association of North Cyprus said that Mr Candounas does not have the right to come to this country and serve a summons from the south. The south is a different country and unless the approval of the court in the North has been sought then no summons can be served.

Foreign property owners apply to join new group

Over 300 people have already joined the European Property Association of North Cyprus. 'Eupro' chairperson Shelley White a US attorney that moved to Karaman from Houston in 2002 said that the group had spent 3 days at the Colony Hotel allowing new members to have the opportunity to come in and sign up, "We have been gratified by the response that we have got". "Over 200 people have come in and sign up within the last 3 days." Eupro are a limited company incorporated in England and North Cyprus with a mailing address in London where more applications are expected. The company aims to counter Greek Cypriot propaganda regarding the TRNC property market. The company is about to launch its own web site. Membership costs £25 per annum; further details are available by writing to 'Eupro', PO Box 163 , Girne.

New 'Green Line' trade regulations come into force.

Amendments to the EU's Green Line regulations have come into force and were matched by reciprocal moves from the TRNC government.

The changes remove obstacles to trade agricultural products such as citrus fruit from the North. The procedure for trading animal products was simplified.

Travelers across the border to the South will be able to take with them personal goods worth a total of 135 euros, one litre of spirits and 40 cigarettes. After a meeting of the council of ministers, they agreed to allow the same quantity of goods to be bought from the South into the North.

Turkish Airlines to Increase flights

Turkish Airlines (THY) have announced plans to increase flights between Istanbul and North Cyprus . From this month, there will now be twice daily flights from Istanbul to Ercan. The airline also plans to introduce three flights a week between Ercan and Stansted Airport in the UK . These extra flights will be in addition to the existing three weekly connections from London 's Heathrow airport. Because of the announcement, THY Cyprus director H Burak Topel said the airline would increase its staff numbers in both the TRNC office and at Ercan airport. THY's current daily flight leaves Ercan at 5.05am allowing passengers to catch connecting flights from Istanbul between 8am and 10am. The newly introduced flights will arrive in Ercan at 1pm and then return to Istanbul at 2.55pm . Last year THY carried some 41,500 passengers on a fleet of 73 aircraft. Mr Topel said that they hoped to increase their fleet to over 120 aircraft with the addition of 36 Airbuses and 15 Boeings.

CTP look set to form coalition with UBP.

Two weeks after the general election the victorious Republican Turkish Party (CTP) have yet to announce with whom they aim to form a coalition government. President Denktas has given the green light to the CTP to form a new administration following Fridays swearing in ceremony for the MP's elected to Parliament. Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Talat has two weeks to form a government and is due to meet with CTP officials and draw up a provisional cabinet list. It was first believed that the CTP would renew its association with the countries Democratic Party (DP), but the two parties are thought to have had a disagreement over the number of ministries the DP would be given control of, the CTP had proposed to cut the number from four to three. The CTP has also demanded that it takes control of the currently DP ran State Planning Organization, moving its control from the Deputy Prime Ministry to the Prime Ministry. Mr Talat is said to be turning his attention from the DP to the UBP , after sources revealed that the UBP did not want to remain in opposition and witness its support drain away any further. The UBP is has indicated it would be happy to accept the CTP's proposals including the position of House Speaker for the UBP's veteran party leader Dervis Eroglu.
