Talat hoping for results from US trip
TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat yesterday urged the United States Government to press on with efforts to end Turkish Cypriot isolation and to encourage other countries and organizations to do the same.
He confirmed afterwards that he had asked the US administration to intensify efforts to study the Cyprus problem and see what new openings could be found.
He said: ' we stressed that nothing can take place of a solution. The US approach to the problem has been clarified by their invitation to meet with us. It is not the US's job to present new solution plans, but the UN's, and the only way forward for Cyprus is the Annan Plan. If the two parties wish to make changes to the plan they must propose them, but as Turkish Cypriots we have ratified it.'
Britain will lead way for Cyprus solution
British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said Britain would lead the way in efforts to find a solution to the Cyprus problem. Speaking in an exclusive interview he said the UK would work ' as hard as anyone has and probably more than most' to find an agreement.
Mr Prescott said ' The way forward is to try to understand the problems, and to talk the way through with the people involved.' He also confirmed that President Mehmet Ali Talat would be invited to meet British Prime Minister Tony Blair in London at a mutually convenient date.
Teachers on strike
Striking teachers brought the country's secondary schools to a standstill yesterday as they staged a mass walk-out and rallied outside the Prime Ministry and Finance Ministry in Lefkosa.
The teachers are seeking the implementation of an agreement signed between five trade unions and the government in 2004. Union leader Adnan Eraslan said the teachers were determined to see the government honor its signature and the promises it made afterwards.
This latest action had come about when a meeting between officials and the union, required to settle the issue, had not come about as scheduled this month.
Addressing the rally, Mr Eraslan said, ' we are here to teach lessons to people who do not learn easily. One has to keep the promises he makes and honor the agreements he signs. Those who fail to do this must be challenged.'
Blaze guts five shops
Five shops in central Lefkosa were gutted in a massive fire on Monday. The area's narrow streets meant fire crews had difficulty in reaching the blaze, which started in a shop near the historical Büyük Han car park at about 9.30 pm and spread to four adjacent historical sandstone shops.
There were fears that someone could have been inside the buildings, but it was later found that none of the shopkeepers had been present at the time. Deputy Mayor Semavi Asik said they did not know yet what had caused the fire but he was saddened that historical buildings had been burnt down.
Girne 'Modernises'
Girne Municipality is overhauling signs and shop fascias as part of the modernization of the town centre. Mayor Sümer Aygin said the work, financed by the United Nations Office for Project Services, was aimed at making Girne a 'European town'
