Power crisis is costing TRNC Cyp £ 78,000 every day
The TRNC is spending Cyp £ 78,000 a day to buy electricity from the south as the power crisis continues. The figure was given yesterday as it emerged that payments would continue as the Kib-Tek bosses on Thursday asked the Greek Cypriot authorities for an extension to the contract to supply them with power. At the meeting they informed officials from the South that further repairs - to pipes in a power turbine which burst on Tuesday, resulting in countrywide blackouts - would take around a month to complete. It is promised that the cost of electricity taken from the South would not be reflected in people's bills, although the rates of the payment for it were higher than local rates. People will only pay for the electricity that they use at normal prices. Intensive repair efforts are being made to the unit and the pipes have been sent to turkey for lab tests.
Straw spells it out
British Foreign secretary Jack Straw had called for the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots to come to an end and said they " must be integrated into Europe " . Speaking in Istanbul after a meeting with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Abdullah Gül, Mr Straw said the proposals made by Mr Gül on Monday to solve the Cyprus Cyprus problem were "very worthwhile and must be followed up as soon as possible". Mr Straw's visit to the TRNC was highly appreciated and it truly reflects his courage and hopefully the isolation of the Turkish Cypriots will come to an end.
TRNC on red alert, hundreds of birds culled
There is still no news on when the test results from a suspected bird flu outbreak in the village on Incirli would be ready. Officials took samples from some of the 1,100 birds thaqt were culled after the scare on Monday and sent them to England for testing. But despite the results being expected in three days they have still not been recieved. Results fronm the South that had been tested previously in the same place took 41 days to come back and it is normal for there to be a delay. The results of the tests that were sent to Turkey for testing are likely to be recieved back in 15 days. Incirli , in the Gazi Magusa district, was put under quarantine after two possible bird flu cases were identified. All poultry that kept in open air was culled. the process continued and 1,020 birds including chicken, turkey, duck, goose, pheasants, parrots, budgies and zebra birds were culled. despite the fact that there is no concrete evidence that the birds were killed by the deadly type of avian flu H5N1, tests showed that the H5 strain caused the deaths. The Turkish Cypriot Doctors' association has distributed Tamiflu Anti-viral medicine to all poultry owners.
Traffic fines go up from next week
Traffic fines in the TRNC will be increased as from the 7th of February in line with the ammendment to the rates of minimum wage. A rise in the minimum wage was announced last week, with an increase to 780 YTL a month from the previous 720 YTL. While the fines are increasing points given for offences will remain the same. Driving licences will be suspended for 3 months if anyone recieved a total of 100 points for repetitive offences.
