Victory day to be marked with ceremonies.
Tuesday 30 th August marks the 83 rd anniversary of Turkey 's victory day. The day will be celebrated with ceremonies taking place in Lefkosa, local military headquarters and other towns across the TRNC.
The say marks the 83 rd anniversary of the victory of Turkish Forces over multi-national forces that had invaded the Turkish mainland during World War 1.
The Turkish Forces were under the command of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the victory meant the end of the Turkish War of liberation and paved the way for the declaration of the modern Turkish Republic about one year later.
The anniversary celebrations begin with the Commander of the Turkish Peace keeping Forces in Cyprus , Lieutenant General Hasan Memisoglu receiving well wishers at the Regimental headquarters in Lefkosa.
First direct flight from Ercan to Baku takes place.
History was made on Monday 29 th August when the first direct flight from Ercan flew to a destination outside Turkey . The Cyprus Turkish Airlines flight to the Azerbaijani capital Baku was carrying a strong TRNC delegation led by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Serdar Denktas.
The development is seen by many as the first step towards breaking the international isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people.
The delegation included several high-ranking government officials, journalists and representatives of many non-governmental organizations.
Also among those on the flight to Baku was the former President of the TRNC Rauf Denktas. The leader of the committee living abroad Nazim Ibrahimov, the Turkish ambassador to Baku Turan Morali and local Turkish businessmen, welcomed the delegation in the Azeri capital.
Speaking on his arrival at Baku, Serdar Denktas said he was proud to be there and hoped that other nations would soon follow in Azerbaijan's footsteps, he added that the most important effect of the direct flight from Ercan to Baku is that "respect for Turkish Cypriot's legitimate rights is the only way to encourage the Greek Cypriots to return to the negotiating table".
Girne Dog owners urged to register pets
Dog owners in the Girne area have only a few days left to register their pets or face prosecution if their unregistered animals are found wandering the streets.
Dogs picked up without identification will be treated as strays and will be neutered and officially tagged as 'street dogs'.
Currently only Girne has a dog registration scheme, but the Kyrenia Animal Rescue (KAR) is urging people living in other areas to follow the same principles and take responsibility for their pets by ensuring they have collars and tags clearly stating the owner's name, address and telephone number.
Strays are neutered, wormed and treated against fleas and ticks. A red numbered tag is put into their ear and they are released back to the area they were found.
KAR believe the only workable long-term strategy is to neuter all strays and this will go a long way towards reducing the number of unwanted and abandoned animals.
Dog licences are renewable annually usually around January and cost 3YTL.
TRNC determi nation to open more border crossings
TRNC president Mehmet Ali Talat, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and most cabinet members inspected the ongoing work at the Bostanci checkpoint.
The checkpoint is due to open in the very near future. Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Serdar Denktas and other high-ranking government officials.
Speaking to reporters President Talat said they were there to show the determination on the part of the TRNC to open a new crossing point between north and south Cyprus at Bostanci. He repeated that the delay in opening the gate was not caused by the TRNC.
Mr Talat complained that there was no activity on the Greek Cypriot side of the line to indicate preparation for the opening of the gate. The President said the TRNC government would go ahead and open the checkpoint's northern gate as planned on Wednesday 31 st August.
Commenting on the Cyprus issue President Talat said the Turkish Cypriot people had kept all their promises and done everything needed to show and prove its willingness, desire and wish to work for a permanent solution to the Cyprus problem.
Improvements at Ercan airport
Big changes are to be made at Ercan airport including a new 3000-metre runway that will be able to cope with larger aircraft. Other planned improvements include an instrument landing system to allow landings in bad weather, closed circuit security cameras and card operated entry system to improve security in the terminal building.
A sonic bird scaring system will also be introduced to prevent incidents caused by birds flying into engines .
New planning decree
A new planning decree covering the villages of Sadrazamköy, Koruçam, Akdeniz, Tepebasi, Çamlibel, Geçitköy and Kayalar, came into force last week. Officials say it is to protect the area from haphazard construction. The decree restricts new buildings to two storeys. However, Akdeniz has been declared a 'tourist encouragement area'.
