Historic day at Lokmaci
Work has begun on the Turkish Cypriot side to demolish the Lokmaci barricade that has divided the centre of Lefkosa from south Nicosia for more than 40 years and make way for a sixth border crossing point. Greek Cypriot authorities said they would follow suit and remove barriers on their side after consulting the United Nations. Lefkosa Turkish Municipality said its 500,000YTL would include checkpoint facilities and a 2.5m high footbridge to take pedestrians across the " Green Line ". It will open hopefully before christmas.
Thousands pay tribute to TRNC stalwarts
Thousands paid tribute on Thursday to two of the most prominent figures in the TRNC political arena who died within 5 hours of each other on Tuesday former Deputy Prime Minister Özker Özgür died at 4.20pm after losing a long battle against cancer. He was 65. the Secretary General and key contender fot he leadership of the main opposition National Unity party, Salih Miroglu, collapsed suddenly with a heart attack and later died on the way to hospital from a second heart attack. A televised state funeral for both was held in front of parliament at 10.30am on Thursday.
Stiff new traffic fines, Tuesday is get tough day.
Foreigners driving in North Cyprus are being advised to make sure their insurance cover is up to date and that they have the correct driving licence. A major clampdown on traffic offences such as drink driving and driving without a valid liscence which will see an increse in penalty points, fines and in some cases potential prison sentences for offenders, comes into force on Tuesday. British or other foreign licences are only recognised for 3 months from the holders date of entry to the TRNC if he or she is usuing a locally registered vehicle. If someone has been here a year car insurance will only be valid on a TRNC licence which can only be obtained with a residency permit.
Abandoned as a baby now the best
A beauty who fought her way out of adversity after being abandoned as a baby and later adopted was named female Best Model of Turkey 2005 in a ceremony held at Girne's Rocks Hotel on Saturday night. 22 year old Tuigçe Güder, already known as a popular model known as " Turkey's Naomi Cambell " , won the female category and Burak Özçivit the male competition in a major national event. Both came from Istanbul. The winners now go on to compete in the 18th Best Model of the World competition in Istanbul on December 9th.
