Foundation Laying Ceremonies
The foundation laying ceremony of the new road intended to ease the traffic in-and-around Girne took place this morning.
Speaking at the ceremony, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer said the national income of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus has reached 10 thousand US dollars thanks to the government's current economic policies, pursued in cooperation with Turkey.
Yesterday, the foundation stone of the new Girne Coastal Highway, linking Girne with Karpas peninsula and Gazimagusa, was laid at a ceremony also attended by Prime Minister Soyer and the visiting Turkish Minister of State Mr Sener.
The foundation stone of the new State Hospital for Gazimagusa was also laid yesterday.
Speaking during today's ceremony, Mr Abdullatif Sener praised the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus for successfully confronting the difficulties created by its international isolation, and, in a way, challenging the world with its efforts in the fields of tourism and agriculture.
Also addressing the ceremony, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer called on the European Court of Human Rights to respect the TRNC's legal system, adding that work has already begun to harmonize the property issue with the international law.
The Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener, who is also in charge of coordinating the Cyprus Affairs, has, meanwhile, returned to Turkey at the end of his three day visit to the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
He was seen-off at Ercan Airport by the Minister of Finance Ahmet Uzun, the Minister of Health Esref Vaiz, the Minister of Public Works and Communications Salih Usar, and the Turkish ambassador in Lefkosa Aydan Karahan.
Mr Sener attended a number of foundation laying ceremonies of major infra-structure projects including roads and hospitals, and met political leaders during his three day stay in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
OIC Delegation Continues Its Contacts In The Republic
The delegation from the Organisation of the Islamic Conference which is on a visit to the Republic with the aim of helping lift the isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people, continued their contacts today.
Led by the O.I.C.'s Assistant Secretary General Atta Avmannan, the delegation paid a visit to the Minister of Economy and Tourism Dervis Kemal Deniz.
Ways to improve economic ties between the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus and the OIC countries were discussed during the meeting.
Speaking before his meeting with the visiting OIC delegation, the Minister of Economy and Tourism Dervis Kemal Deniz said that progress was achieved towards improving trade links between the Republic and the Islamic countries, adding that concrete steps are to be taken soon on the issue.
Mr Deniz said that the OIC delegation's visit to the Republic was mainly aimed at searching ways of helping the Turkish Cypriot economy.
For his part, the O.I.C.'s Assistant Secretary General Atta Avmannan, explained that the delegation's yesterday's contacts were mainly focused on ways of helping to bring about a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem, adding that the delegation wanted to concentrate on the issues of economy and trade during its today's contacts.
He said that the Moslem countries will be pleased to contribute the North Cyprus economy through investments in the tourism sector, noting that a report will be prepared at the end of the visit on funds that could be provided to North Cyprus.
The delegation yesterday paid visits to Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer, Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas, and held separate talks at the Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Industry.
British High Commissioner Peter Millet Visits The UBP Leader
The leader of the main opposition National Unity Party Huseyin Ozgurgun has said that it would be wrong to accept the Financial Assistance Regulation in its current form.
Mr Ozgurgun's words came during a courtesy visit paid to him by the British High Commissioner Peter Millet today.
The meeting was the first between the two men.
No statement was issued by the British High Commissioner Peter Millet before or after the meeting.
For his part, the UBP Leader Huseyin Ozgurgun speaking before the meeting, said that he was going to explain his party's views on the Cyprus issue to the British High Commissioner, adding that the Financial Assistance Regulation will also be on the agenda.
Mr Ozgurgun said that he also wanted to exchange views with Mr Millet on the withdrawal of the UN check point in Pyla to a point just before the Turkish Cypriot check point, which he said, disappointed the villagers.
Responding to a question, the UBP Leader said that it would be wrong to accept the Financial Assistance Regulation in its current form.
`This wasn't the main target. The main objective was to get the international isolation and the embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot people lifted`, he said, adding that this could only be achieved with the implementation of the Direct Trade Regulation.
The Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis has said that Greece supports a bicommunal solution to the Cyprus problem within a United Cyprus.

She was speaking at a joint press conference in Washington with the US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
The Greek Foreign Minister said that a settlement to the problem should be, what she termed as "a democratic one" , and take into consideration the standing UN Security Council resolutions on Cyprus and the Secretary General's proposals, and based on EU norms.
