Denktas " A new era for Turkish Cypriots".

During his speech at Saturdays presidential handover ceremony outgoing President Rauf Denktas said that a new era has started in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. He stated that oppressed by embargoes and isolation for many years, Turkish Cypriots wanted change and had demonstrated this by electing the "Pro Europe"S Mr Mehmet Ali Talat. Mr Denktas said he has always supported "unbreakable" peace for the island, he added that a settlement must not be the repetition of the incidents during the 1960's and the rights of both sides of the island should be maintained. He stated that the Greek Cypriots have begun to disclose some realities of the past with the courage of being an EU member, he called on Mr Talat to evaluate these statements. Following the days meeting with Abdullah Gul, Turkey's foreign minister, Mr Denktas said that Mr Gul had reiterated that Turkey would not abandon the TRNC for the sake of peace. Mr Denktas added that "we would not have existed today had Turkey not arrived in Cyprus to save us". Speaking of the Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadapoulos, Mr Denktas said that if he wanted a solution on the island than Papadapolous should compensate the families of those killed during 1964-74 and must apologise for the atrocities commited by the Greek Cypriots. Mr Papadapolous should also abandon the policy of claiming to be the legitamate government of the whole of the island.

CTP General secretary appointed acting Prime Minister.

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) have appointed the party's secretary general Ferdi Sabit Soyer prime minister. Newly elected president Mehmet Ali talat finally renounced his premiership and his parliamentary seat on Friday, before officially taking over as president of the TRNC on Saturday.

One of President Talats first duties was to give Soyer the task of forming a new government. Ferdi Sabit Soyer will hold the post of Prime Minister until the CTP hold an extraordinary congress on the 21st May. It is likely that Mr Soyer will hold onto the premiership following the party congress.

Judge rejects "Orams" appeal.

April 19th should have been the final day in court for Lapta couple Linda and David Orams, but the Greek Cypriot judge Elana Efram took just over an hour to reject the couples appeal plea to keep their property. The Orams and their lawyer Gunes mentes have until the 29th April to enter a defence plea. The couple who also own property in the UK were not present at the court hearing that delivered the verdict that original ruling stating that the Orams would have to demolish their property in Lapta and pay the former owner £7000 cyprus pounds in damages.

The case will now be taken to the supreme court. In a statement Linda Orams commented that she and her husband felt "hounded and persecuted as a result of political rather than personal issues". Mrs Orams added that "The Annan plan made full provision for settlement and compensation of land issues resulting from the past conflict and it is disapointing that it was not accepted by the Greek Cypriots in last Aprils referendum." Mrs Orams said "It is also regrettable that as soon as the Greek Cypriots become citizens of the EU, they choose to turn against people of other EU countries instead of joining in a spirit of unity, ontrary to the ideals of the EU.
