President to US
President Mehmet Ali Talat will fly to the US for his planned meeting with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday, after her official letter of invitation was passed on to the President. Mr Talat will present a copy of the resolution to Ms Rice when they meet, calling for US support on the lifting of international embargoes against North Cyprus.The President confirmed yesterday that he was also expecting a formal invitation to visit Britain.
Bird Flu: Cabinet to decide on hunt
Ministers will decide next Saturday whether winter hunting should be banned because of bird flu fears. Health and Social Aid Minister Esref Vaiz said they had already taken all possible measures against the bird flu virus, including stock-piling enough anti-viral medicine Tamflu to treat 20,000 people. The failure to implement an immediate ban led to the TRNC Doctor's Union withdrawing from the commision set up in the awake of the outbreak in Turkey of a deadly strain of bird flu.
Party farewell to BDP in Cyprus The Bicommunal Development Programme (BDP) held a reception to thank its partners and supporters, after 7 years of implementing projects aimed at fostering co-operation between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. Some 300 people attended the celebration in the United Nations Protected Area, including NGO representatives, political figures and members of the press and the international community.
Kirgiz gesture of solidarity
A 23 strong Kyrgyz delegation including fifteen MPs and three deputy ministers was to fly home this morning after a three day visit to North cyprus. The delegation met President Mehmet Ail Talat, House speaker Fatma Ekenoglu, Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer and his deputy, Serdar Denktas. They also visited National Education and Cultural Minister Canan Öztoprak and Youth and Sports Minister Özkan Yorgancioglu.
Kyrgyz parliamentarian Arslan Maliev said they were hoping to narrow the distance between the two parliaments throught the visit. He said 'We are here with you in order to seriously improve our relations with brother state TRNC and to demonstrate this to the world'
'No Motivation'
TRNC Prime Minister Ferdi Sabit Soyer has said if Turkey were to open its ports to Greek Cypriots there would be no motivation left to find a solution to the Cyprus problem.
He said ' If Turkey opens its ports to the Greek Cypriots side, what is going to motivate the South to find a solution and who is going to make it change its policy of no solution? This is a fact which the democtaric world public should focus on'
Interest free loans agreed for small business
Businessmen in the catering and hotel industries in TRNC as well as individuals are being offered interest free bank credits payable in five years. Credits will be made available to restaurant owbers, hotels without casinos and individuals who wish to make aiterations to thier houses with the aim of renting them out to students. The project aims to increase the quality of service in small hotels and restaurants as well as making it possible for the country to cope with the increasing number of students.
