Turkish Cypriots File Suit Against The Greek Cypriot Administration
The Cyprus Turkish Human Rights Foundation has filed a “Case of Negligence” against the Greek Cypriot Administration in the Greek Cypriot High Court on behalf of the families of 84 Turkish Cypriots from the village of Tashkent or Dohni, and Terazikoy who have been missing since 1974.
The Foundation filed the case against the Greek Cypriot Administration on claims that it has neglected carrying out investigations to reveal the true fate of dozens of missing Turkish Cypriots.
The first hearing of the case is expected to be held in May.
Speaking on the issue, the President of the Human Rights Foundation Emine Erk said the foundation had filed the case as a last resort following a number of independent, yet futile attempts made by the families of the missing.
Reminding that relatives of the missing Turkish Cypriots had accepted an earlier call on them by the Greek Cypriot Foreign Ministry to provide blood samples for DNA testing, Mrs Erk said that the case filed against the Greek Cypriot Administration was not only aimed at providing answers for the missing persons from Tashkent and Terazikoy but to provide precedence aimed at shedding light on the true fate of all other missing Turkish Cypriots since 1974.
Turks always a step ahead
Turkish Minister of State and the country’s Chief Negotiator with the European Union Ali Babacan has reiterated the Turkish government’s position in support of helping find a lasting solution to the Cyprus problem.
Speaking in Stockholm where he held contacts on Turkey’s relations with the EU, the Turkish Minister of State responded to a question on the Cyprus issue, by saying that Cyprus continues to be one of the most important issues of Turkish Foreign Policy.
Responding to reporters’ questions in Stockholm where he’s been having contacts on relations between the European Union and Turkey, Ali Babacan stressed the fact that Cyprus continues to be an important issue for Turkey, on which, he said, the country must be very careful when taking steps.
“It is also important that we keep-up our strenuous efforts to help find a comprehensive settlement to the Cyprus problem – and this also constitutes an important issue in our relations with the European Union” he said.
Mr Babacan reminded that Turkish Cypriots had voted to approve the Annan Plan as a basis for a comprehensive settlement to the problem, and said this is a sign of Turkish Cypriots’ sincerity in their expressed willingness for a solution to the Cyprus problem.AD
He said Turkey will continue to be “a step ahead” on the Cyprus issue, looking for a solution to the Cyprus problem.
He stressed the importance of the need for a negotiated and comprehensive settlement to be found to the Cyprus issue within the framework of the United Nations.
British High Commissioner Peter Millet Visits The UBP Leader
Mr Ozgurgun’s words came during a courtesy visit paid to him by the British High Commissioner Peter Millet today.
The meeting was the first between the two men.
No statement was issued by the British High Commissioner Peter Millet before or after the meeting.
For his part, the UBP Leader Huseyin Ozgurgun speaking before the meeting, said that he was going to explain his party’s views on the Cyprus issue to the British High Commissioner, adding that the Financial Assistance Regulation will also be on the agenda.
Mr Ozgurgun said that he also wanted to exchange views with Mr Millet on the withdrawal of the UN check point in Pyla to a point just before the Turkish Cypriot check point, which he said, disappointed the villagers.
Responding to a question, the UBP Leader said that it would be wrong to accept the Financial Assistance Regulation in its current form.
`This wasn’t the main target. The main objective was to get the international isolation and the embargoes on the Turkish Cypriot people lifted`, he said, adding that this could only be achieved with the implementation of the Direct Trade Regulation.
