Urgent Turbine Repairs but 'real possibility for more black outs'

The chairman of electricity workers' union El-Sen said yesturday that he warned the governmet months ago about the possibility of the power cut chaos which was endured by the TRNC this week.

And despite repairs being carried out the crippled Teknecik power station, Hasan Kaide believes there is a real possibility for more blackouts

If the damage in the first Turbine is worse than expected he believes that maintenance work could continue for at least another month.

The damage to the second turbine was fixed and tested yesturday, improving on the amount of times homes and businesses were without power.

Mr Kaide said "The type of turbines found in Teknecik must be maintained every 60,000 hours and it has been operating for around 130,000 hours at a capacity of 98% which is well over the world standard! The kind of maintenance that Teknecik needs to go through last for three months and without a proper back-up there is no way of avoiding cuts."

Construction of four 17.5MW thermal power plants whose tender process was delayed for a year, due the goverment having financial difficulties, will be completed towards the end of 2006, say officials. This will be enough energy to supply the country while Teknecik is being maintained. But in the next 11 months untill they are operating there is a strong possibility of Teknecik malfunctioning again, Mr Kaide Added.

The building trade of Northern Cyprus is constantly in the press and often not in a possotive light. But a US-trained architectural engineer is bringing her eight years experience of the American construction indrusty to Northern Cyprus, and hopes har new business venture, offering surveys and project guidence will help to put some minds at ease.

Balgiz Öztemir and her business partner, Derya Ibrahim-Bahçenerli have set up the new company under the name Independent Building Assurance.

"We are hoping to help the construction industry to set standards here in North Cyprus. We are starting small, but we have alot of knowledge and experience and this industry needs to sart employing specialised and qualified people if it is to grow".

Mum and Daughter face deportation

A British woman and her daughter faced deportation from the TRNC last night after she was arrested for working without a permit. Sally-Ann Cooke was taken to girne police station with her eight year old duaghter and told she would face a court case or immediate deportation. But the temporary resident, who works for IT company Ayzanet, had already payed a fine three days ago after a police warning about not having a permit. Despite this and having applied for a permit, police took her and her daughter to the police station where they were awaitimg a decision on their fututre. Kemal Basat, from Ayzanet, who accompanied Sally-Ann to the police station, said he could not understand why the pair were being held. He said: "This situation had, we thought, already been sorted out by Sally paying the fine even though she is a temporary resident and has applied for a work permit. To arrest her and hold her and her daughter under threat of immediate deportation without a trial seems unbelievable and I am trying to sort this situation out.
