Pertev: We wont turn down EU'S 259M
TRNC Preidential undersecretary Rasit Pertev this week signalled and apparent softening towards EU aid and trade proposals, saying North Cyprus would accept financial aid from the European Union even if it approved without the green light for direct trade. Mr Pertev said the Turkish Cypriot side did not approve the final version of the financial aid regulation, which disregards their objections. But he said the Turkish Cypriot side, which had been holding out for the two regulations to be linked, would not prevent the implementation of the financial aid regulation - worth 259 million euros, if it is approved by the EU without the measure in direct trade.
Join hands for tourism, South urged
Economy and Tourism Minister Dervis Kemal Deniz has called on the Greek Cypriot
side to cooperate in the field of tourism. Mr Denis said tourism should be kept out of
politics and Turkish and Greek Cypriots should cooperate in order to develop the
islands potential. 'The lack of solution on the island must not prevent us from
cooperating in tourism', he said. Mr Deniz added ' Not just from England and Turkey,
we need tourists from all over the world. I am presenting a common formula to
South Cyprus. If we enter the world tourism market together, both sides will gain hugely from this. We in the North have historical treasures and unspoilt natural beauties. On the other hand the infrastructure and hotels of the Greek Cypriots are better. If we can combine our assets at this point, this will help both sides'.
Bird Flu Panic
The results of tests in a sick sea bird found in the Göçmenköy area of Lefkosa on Monday night were still being awaited. The discovery of the migrant Great Bittern in the garden of a house sparked panic amongst local residents, with fears that it could be carrying the avian flu virus. The bird was taken away for examination by veterinary surgeons.
Strange Alsancak arch
Many residents in Karaoglanoglu and Alsancak may have been wandering about the purpose of a strange 'arch' which appeared about a month ago on the main road between the two villages. It has been revealed that the arch will act as a 'gateway' in and out of Alsancak Municipality. Mayor of Alsancak Dr Yücel Atakara said 'The people will now see Alsancak and its attractions as excisting themselves, as apposed to before when the town was under the shadow of Girne and Lapta'.
