Hotel owners hoping for best Summer yet.
Hotel owners in North Cyprus are hoping that this summer will be there best one yet for North Cyprus Tourism.
Tourism in North Cyprus deals with a predominantly British market and many prefer to arrive on the island via Larnaca airport.
In a report published in South Cyprus's Sunday Mail newspaper the Jasmine Court Hotel in Girne said they were 90 per cent booked for the whole of the summer period, whilst the 'Dome' hotel also suggested the hotel would be running at over 90 per cent capacity over the summer months. Both commented that the number of tourists entering the island via Larnaca and crossing the green line to stay for the duration of their holiday in the North was increasing.
The Turkish Cypriot authorities have campaigned intensively since last years referendum on the Annan plan for ports and the airport in the North to be declared legal by the international community. It was hoped that opening the airport up to international air traffic would help boost the economy of North Cyprus . However, it seems that tourism is doing well despite the fact the airport is still unable to receive direct flights.
TRNC Coaches cross border for first time.
Seven coaches carrying 350 Turkish Cypriot pilgrims from Cyprus , Australia and Britain were delayed for three hours on Saturday 18 th June at the border crossing point before being allowed to continue their journey to the Hala Sultan Tekke mosque on Larnaca's salt lake.
The coaches having insufficient insurance, not covering them to transport large numbers of passengers, caused the delay.
The pilgrims eventually made their journey by being escorted by Greek Cypriot police. The occasion marked the first time coaches with TRNC registration plates had crossed the border into the South.
British High Commissioner leaves for new posting.
Around 150 people gathered in Lefkosa last week to bid farewell to the departing British High Commissioner Lyn Parker. Members of the British community in TRNC, Turkish Cypriot businessmen and political leaders, attended the gathering held in the grounds of the high commission. The TRNC president Mehmet Ali Talat and his wife Oya were also present. Mr Parker and his family have now left the island to take up a new posting in The Hague . His replacement Peter Miller will arrive in Cyprus at the end of this month.
Procedural reasons blamed for new bypass delays.
It was announced on Friday 17 th June that outstanding technical issues had meant the accepted bid to construct the new Girne bypass had been cancelled. The contract to build the bypass that will run from Girne to Alsancak was originally awarded to a Turkish firm in December.
Bidding for the new contract is due to start immediately in Turkey but will not be finalised until September this year, delaying completion of the project until at least autumn 2007.
TRNC officials are working on a smaller scale project. The alternative plan is being prepared in co-operation with the Girne Municipality and Ministry of the interior and is being designed to help alleviate the traffic congestion in and around Girne.
"Secret" talks end in failure.
Supposedly, secret talks held last week in Brussels between Turkish and Greek Cypriots broke down before reaching a conclusion. The breakdown was caused by the Greek Cypriots objection to the European Unions direct trade regulations, which they claimed would lead to the recognition of the TRNC.
President Mehmet Ali Talat said it was time for the European Union to reconsider whether it would keep the promise it had made to the Turkish Cypriots. After announcing the failure of the talks Mr Talat asked if it was the Europeans Unions intention to leave the TRNC at the mercy of the Greek Cypriots, "who persist in depriving us of using our ports for trade?"
Mr Talat said the talks between Turkish and Greek Cypriot delegations, had discussed the implementation of financial aid and direct trade regulations, but in spite of 'every flexibility and reconciliation effort' by the Turkish Cypriot side, a conclusion could not be reached because of the uncompromising Greek Cypriot approach.
However, Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos blamed the Turkish Cypriots for the failure of the discussions claiming they had shown no will to move on the issues raised by the Greek Cypriots including the handover of Maras (Varosha) and controls on the development of former Greek Cypriot property in the North.
