Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation issue Statement

Emine Erk the chairperson of the Turkish Cypriot Human Rights Foundation issued a statement that drew attention to the difficulties faced by Turkish Cypriots pursuing their legal rights in South Cyprus .

The statement specifically touches upon the property issue, underlining the significant impact and effect the court cases filed in the Greek Cypriot courts have had on Turkish Cypriots. The statement says it is clear the property issues in Cyprus can only be fully resolved within the context of a solution to the Cyprus Problem.

The statement goes on to say, "Turkish Cypriots, who expressed a clear will in favour of a solution to the Cyprus problem, are disheartened to see how, such developments make the confidence and co-operation - essential to a lasting peace in Cyprus - diminish day by day." It highlights the fact the many Turkish Cypriots visiting their property left in the south find that their properties are being used for different purposes - public or private - without their permission or any valid legal process or compensation.

The statement explains how Turkish Cypriots applying to the Greek Land Registrar for information, documentation or transfer of property, are experiencing undue delays and occasionally outright refusals of assistance.

Party leaders send joint letter to UN Secretary General

The Republican Turkish Party (CTP) and Greek Cypriot United Democrats Party (EDI) have sent a letter to the United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan urging him to renew his efforts towards restarting the Cyprus negotiations process.

The letter carries the signatures of the two parties' leaders Ferdi Sabit Soyer and George Vasiliu. In the letter, the two parties expressed deep concerns over the failure to achieve progress towards bringing about a solution to the Cyprus Problem, and warned that the continuation of the problem unsolved, carries risks.

They also called upon the Secretary General to renew his efforts aimed at bringing about a solution to the problem under the guidance of the United Nations and help implement confidence building measures with the aim of creating the necessary goodwill and co-operation between the Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots.

"We believe that peace and prosperity can only be brought to the island with a bizonal bicommunal federal solution to the Cyprus problem being reached" the joint letter said.

The two parties also stressed their determination to continue their common struggle until their joint vision of a reunified Cyprus in a united Europe is achieved.

Pupils back to school after summer break

Thursday was 'Back to School' day for over 18,000 nursery and primary school pupils, following the long three-month summer break. Classes for secondary and high school pupils begin again on Monday.

This school year sees the introduction of a new education system. Education and Culture Minister Canan Ö ztoprak said her officials had taken "every possible precaution" against teacher and book shortages in schools. The new modern system is intended to improve the quality of education by allowing the students to explore and question, and to relate what they learn in class to everyday life. While improving their ability in Turkish, students will be able to develop communication skills in English and will have access to computers and technology in general. Mrs Ö ztoprak appealed to parents to work closely with teachers in solving any problems faced by their children.
