I'll give you thirty days
Confusion reigned this week over apparent changes to entry visa regulations which give foreiners entering the TRNC just 30 days in the country instead of three months. While officials insisted there has been no policy change, some britons have reported seeing a 30 - day stamp in their passport on arrival. Another had the standard visa stamp ammended by hand by an immigration official. While some immigration officers at Ercan airport were giving 90 day visas to arriving britons others were giving 30 days. A senior police officer denied that there was any law limiting entry visas to one month and suggested issuing variable visas had been in practice for a long time. Immigration officers have the right to ask a tourist how long they are intending to stay and if that person says a month or two weeks then it is normal for immigration to give the visa according to the duration of the stay.
Lottery sweeps the TRNC
Money worries getting you down and leaving you short on seasonal cheer? Then this could be just the ticket for you! Lotto fever is sweeping the TRNC after organisers of the Turkish state lottery announced a recored 30 million YTL draw for new year's eve. The draw will feature a first prize of 20 million YTL, one prize of 5 million YTL and 5 prizes of one million YTL. Organisers expect around 200 million YTL worth of lottery tickets to be sold in the TRNC and turkey. A whole ticket for the draw will cost 20 YTL, or players can buy half a share in a ticket for 10 YTL or a quarter share for 5 YTL. At the same time, the TRNC state lottery will stage it's own New Year's Eve draw, with a top prize of 300,000 YTL for a stake of 10 YTL a ticket.
Mahoney murders: accused changes his plea
a teenager accused of the murder of popular expats Ann and Reece Mahony has withdrawn his confession, naming two other people who he claims knifed the couple to death on their lapta doorstep in February. Seventeen year old Ufuk Deynekli, who was arrested on the day the Mahoney's bodies wer found, admitted the killings in his first statement to the police. But he pleaded not guilty at Girne Assizes court this week saying he did not kill the couple - TRNC residants for some 17 years and founder members of Kyrenia Animal Rescue - but had stolen their gold jewellery. It is believed that a robbery had taken place at the Mahoney's house where the telephone cable had been cut and the electricity turned off, and suspected the killer had known the victims. Deynekli had gone to the restaurant where he worked with wounds to his face. He told colleagues he had fallen out of bed and relatives that he had hit his head on a door. When he was arrested, he told police he had attacked the Mahoney's after they swore at him, afterwards hiding their possessions in a bag which he helped the police to recover, and throwing the knife away. A verdict is expected on Friday.
Move for fairer health test fees
A move to bring health fees paid by " third country " foreigners and Turkish nationals into line with each other is still being worked on, and is being held up by opposition within the health ministry, it was revealed this week. It was reported last week that the level of charges for work and residence permits for third country nationals were believed to have been reduced to make it the same as Turkish citizens. But residents from countries other than Turkey are still paying more for the health tests they must go through in order to obtain the permits. Currently the fees are around 107 YTL for a Turkish national and 360 YTL for a third country national for the same tests, which include Hepatitis, HIV, tuberculosis and an X ray. Some think that those not from Turkey should pay more because they are charged more in the UK and other European countries for the education of their children. Whether the one fee for all system is finalised or not is to be decided int he future.
