Rice to invite Talat
American Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is expected to issue an invitation soon, possibly as early as this week, to TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat to visit her in Washington DC. The likelihood of the invitation is reported in the Turkish language press to have been conveyed to the Presidency through dipomatic channels, but the exact date of the trip is yet to be fixed.
Deputy PM Serdar Denktas speaks out
Turkish Cypriot people cannot live in uncertainty indefinately, TRNC Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Serdar Denktas warned this week. He said ' Neither should or can we wait for the Greek Cypriot side to come to a solution in their own terms at their own pace.
The Greek Cypriot referendum results of April 24, 2004, have clearly demonstrated that the Greek Cypriot people are not ready to get into power sharing arrangements with the Turkish Cypriots.
' We will certainly put all our effort into bringing our people to their rightful place within the international community, expediting our efforts to achieve the easing of the unjust isolation of the Turkish Cypriot people.'
Mr Denktas spoke of the injustice that had arisen after the Annan plan, with the greek Cypriots who rejected it becoming a member of the EU.
'The Turkish Cypriot people have clearly shown their willingness to a solution by accepting the Annan plan, regardless of the painful sacrifices it entailed, and yet they endure the frustration of being left out in the cold, day in, day out.
Mr Denktas said any future Cyprus negotiations could only succeed if Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos set out his vision for a settlement, as requested by the UN Secretary-General. But the EU's unilateral admission of the Greek Cypriots as 'Cyprus' had given them leverage and removed their incentive to negotiate.
Bird Flu : Don't panic
A Government commision last night advised a ban on hunting in the TRNC until May, and the public has been urged not to panic as emergency measures are implemented in the wake of the outbreak of a deadly strain of bird flu in Turkey. The commision has called for a ban on the entry into the country of any winged species meat product which has not undergone heat treatment to make it safe.
The bird flu virus, which never previously threatened humans, became a serious threat to man after a process of mutation. Experts are concerned that the virus may undergo further changes and turn into a form which spreads easily from human to human.
The Health Ministry said the TRNC had already begun to reinforce its stock of viral medicines. However there is no specific vaccine against bird flu.
TRNC aid for quake victims
Aid from the TRNC government to Pakistan has been handed over to officials in Islamabad by a team sent out from North Cyprus after the devastating earthquake which hit the country, killing at least 20,000 people. Nine doctors, six nurses and twelve search-and-rescue personnel from the Civil Defence Organisation went to Pakistan on Wednesday taking medical equipment, blankets, food and water, painkillers, syrup and vitamins. Meanwhile the Cyprus Turkish Women's Union has launched a campaign for aid to Pakistan and the Religious Affairs Employees' Union called on people to give their Ramadan donations to the Pakistani people.
Population Increasing
Latest research shows the population in North Cyprus is increasing with births exceeding deaths. According to the statistics for the period between 2000 and June 2005, 14,940 births occurred while 4,244 people died. Most deaths are said to be caused by heart disease, respiratory failure and lung disease, brain or internal haemorrhage.
Dikmen dump fires ' a serious health hazard'
An environment chief has claimed serious health hazards are being created by fires and waste from septic tanks being disposed of at the Dikmen dumping area.
Chairman of the Chamber of Environmental Engineers Ibrahim Alkan said refurbishment of the old dump was needed along with a new recycling project. Mr Alkan said that another problem was tankers that had collected waste from septic tanks depositing their loads, which then reached the city of Lefkosa through the river network and caused a health hazard.
