Esentepe Golf and Country Club
IT was golf course project manager Arne van Amer-ongen who gave me the headline for this latest look at the progress on the TRNC's Korineum Golf and Country Club, as the development near Esentepe is now officially titled.
Driving around the course on one of the 37 golf buggies, with Arne at the wheel, one could see his point.
You don't need to be a golfer to appreciate the size of the task. Quite literally, the foothills near Esentepe have been totally redesigned.
To give a pointer on how much the clean-up of the entire area has been: how does 3,000 truck-loads of earth sound?
But rest assured, it has been beautifully done. When finished, this course will be a total asset, not only to the island but to our environment too. Where once there was scrubland and bare earth, now there are protected olive and pine trees along with grass so vividly green even Chelsea could play on it.
Listening to Mr van Amer-ongen describing the initial startup of the project is amazing. Instead of starting with a fully laid-out plan, he actually started backwards.
The first task was to lay the network of pathways, working off the GPS (global positioning satellite) points of the tees, fairways and greens. For an astonishing 10 months and three weeks, he and one man with an interpreter walked miles of the proposed course. Mr van Amer-ongen led; the man followed, laying a trail of gypsum behind him. Basically, the shape of the course came from this. Then the positioning of the holes was factored in and slowly the computerised design began to be laid out.
Relating the initial setting up process before the serious design work started, Mr van Amerongen looks around today, laughs and shakes his head.
"I don't know how we have got this far — I mean, to cut out the fairways meant a guy going down 10 metres in front with a five metre pole so I could see how things might look. Then we would decide 'Yes' and then cut through to start the shape."
He looks around: "I am so pleased with our respect of nature, we have hardly lost anything."
With the main hard work coming to an end with irrigation systems completed, seeding is under way.
From my last visit three months ago, the results are visible. The tee boxes are shaped, the fairways built and finally, the greens and bunkers are ready for the greenkeeper's touch.
Meet Alan Purdie, whose CV includes three years at St Andrew's, the home of golf. Make no mistake, this is a serious operation. Mr Purdie tells me he will be heading up a team of 20 ground staff, including two mechanics and one electrician.
With Mr van Amerongen confirming working a seven-day, 65-hour week up at the course, you can tell he is relieved he now has a fellow golf professional alongside him to share the responsibility. Good old "Anglo Saxon" words now re- verberate around the course!
This illustrates the pressure these men are under.
Serious money has gone into the project, so the investors want it up and running as soon as possible.
Understandable, Mr van Amerongen admits, but at the same time to rush a project like this when it's near to fruition could make a potentially great golf course into "just a golf course".
Mr van Amerongen explains: "May 2006 is the target for the opening. The course will have established itself — run too fast, you fall. But we are lucky to have Dr Günay Çerkez, investor and chairman of the project, fully behind us; his enthusiasm to do a good job matches ours."
In the meantime, seeding goes on, along with fixing all the inevitable teething problems such as the odd irrigation water leak as the giant system settles down. The clubhouse, all 3,200 square metres of it, continues upwards and outwards.
