Historical Touristic Places of Kyrenia / 04-The Monastery of Bellapais

The Peace Monastery which tooks its name from French "Abbaye de la Paix", and which is the most beautiful sample of Gothic art, is built on the rocky top of the mountain in the south of Ozan village below the skirts of Besparmak mountains in the south-east of Girne.

The first inhabitants of the monastery are priests from Augustinian sect who migrated due to the capture of Jerusalem by Selahaddin Eyyubi in 1187. The main part of the monastery was built during 1198-1205 by King Hugh III of France. When the island was taken by the Ottomans, the building was delivered to the Orthodox church. Since the 13th century, this church is at the end of the yard of the Bellapais Monastery.

The Italian frescoes seen at front side were made in the 15th century. Overlooking the city, the magnificent Monastery with its dining room, underground cellars, kitchen, shops, meeting room, storeroom of church utensils, treasury room, and with its Gothic stone carving is worth seeing.
